In Elm class we have two adults supporting learning: Miss Whiteley (class teacher), Miss Wilson (teaching assistant)  and Miss Whitehouse (teaching assistant)

Autumn 1

Year 2 have had a fantastic first half term. We had a great time in Filey and have learnt lots about seaside towns back in school. We have enjoyed our class story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ and have become authors ourselves and written our own stories. We have made a healthy salad and written instructions to tell others how to make it. In art, we have been learning about colour mixing and creating tints and shades. Take a look at some of our pictures from this half term.

Next half term, our topic is space. We will be reading the story ‘Man on the Moon’ and we will be using this story to write diary entries and non-chronological reports. In history, we will be learning about the first man on the moon. In maths, we will be carrying on our unit on addition and subtraction and then starting to learn about multiplication and division. We will be learning our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Children’s reading will continue to be a priority throughout the year. Well done to all the children for their efforts with this…keep reading as much as you can at home! The Olympic reading challenge will be running till the end of the term. The aim of this is to foster and encourage the children’s love of reading.

We are so impressed with how all the children have settled into Year 2 so far and have been working so hard. Keep up the great work everyone!

Autumn 2

Year 2 had a great Autumn 2 half term. We read the book ‘Man on the Moon’ in English and even had a visit from Bob the astronaut in class. In English, we wrote Bob’s diary entry for his day on the moon and wrote reports on Mars. In Maths, we started learning about multiplication and have been reciting our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Have a look at the photos of our activities in class.

In Spring 1 our class text is ‘The Selfish Crocodile’. We will be writing our own version of this story and will be writing non-chronological reports about crocodiles. In Maths, we will be continuing to learn about multiplication and will be introduced to division. We will also be learning about length, mass and temperature. In science, our topic is materials and we will be discussing their properties. We will be learning all about our wonderful world in Geography so we will know the names of the seven continents and five oceans, which make up our world. We will also be learning a Countries dance in indoor PE. Our PSHCE lessons will be all about medicines and our games unit is benchball.

Please note, our PE days are now Monday and Thursday and children should come to school in a PE kit on these days. We will be starting our new Spring reading challenge from the beginning of the term.

Spring 1

Year 2 have had a fantastic start to 2022 and the Spring half term. We read the book ‘The Selfish Crocodile’ in English and even did some drama work where we became the different characters in the story. We also wrote our own version of the ‘The Selfish Crocodile’ where we became authors and changed the main characters and part of the plot. We have also researched and written some non- chronological reports all about crocodiles. In Maths, we have continued looking at the division and multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times table. We are becoming TT Rock star experts!

In Geography we have been learning all about our wonderful world. We have learnt all the names of the seven continents and five oceans, which make up our world. We researched the different continents and used the globes to locate them. In Art we have been learning how to paper weave and made our very own under the sea theme place mats. We have also made some under the sea theme batiks! Have a look at our pictures to see. In P.E we have learnt a countries dance to link in with our Geography work which the children were amazing at!

In science we learnt all about different materials and their properties and we went on a learning walk around school to identify different materials. We even learnt about the famous inventor John Boyd who created the pneumatic tyre. Year 2 also had a fantastic piano workshop where the children were treated to a performance and then were able to take part in games as part of the workshop.

The children who completed the Autumn term reading challenge were also given their reward books which they picked themselves. We have started the reading challenge for Spring term and the children are already engaged and enjoying it!

Spring 2

Year 2 have had a great Spring term. At the start of the term, we found a mysterious, giant egg near our chicken coop which we decided to bring inside and care for. We thought it might even be a dragon egg! This lead us to reading our book ‘The Egg’ in English where we retold the story. We then looked at the features of instruction writing and wrote a set of instructions for ‘How to catch a dragon’. In Maths, we have been learning about money.

In History we have been learning all about Florence Nightingale and why she was significant. We even went on a trip to the Thackray Medical Museum where we travelled back in time to 1854 and became nurses and porters in the Crimean War. Have a look at our pictures to see what we got up to! In computing we have been using book creator to make a book about Neil Armstrong and Florence Nightingale. We have been learning keyboard, dictation and presenting skills to do this.

In Science we studied an explorative unit looking at forces. We looked at the different types of forces and how the amount of force applied to an object can change the speed and direction. In P.E we have been doing gymnastics and developing the fundamental skills learnt already focusing on balancing and jumping.

This half term our class text is Jack and the Beanstalk and we will be using the story to make our own versions based on the traditional tale. Our science topic is all about plants and we will be planting and growing our own sunflowers. In maths, we will be looking at fractions and shape.

In May, we will be doing our SATs assessments. The children will complete booklets on reading, maths and spelling, grammar and punctuation.
