Year 6: How to support your child’s maths learning at home.
To help with children’s learning, we would encourage them to develop their understanding of these facts and mental strategies. The table below builds upon learning and understanding from previous years and gives children the foundations for their learning to come. A solid understanding of these concepts can support children on their mathematical learning journey and support new learning for new up and coming mathematical concepts. Children are also encouraged to access TTRS daily to ensure a rapid recall of the multiplication facts and may be asked to access activities set on ‘My Maths’ to consolidate learning.

Key Stage 2 Mathematics Test
In May, children in year 6 will take their end of key stage 2 SAT tests. These include three mathematics tests: an arithmetic paper and two problem solving and reasoning papers. Throughout the year, children will be exposed to the range of questions they may find on these both within lessons and in practice papers.
Arithmetic Paper
This consists of a mixture of one and two mark questions which require quick and accurate calculation. The thirty minute paper includes questions such as these. They are numbered, have space for children to do the working out and have the number of marks achievable noted at the side of the page. There are typically around 35 questions in total and the maximum number of marks available is 40.
Reasoning and Problem Solving Paper
This consists of a mixture of one, two and three mark questions which require mathematical thinking to pick apart the questions. The structure of the questions can vary greatly and can require children to write down their reasoning. Questions are numbered and have the number of marks achievable noted at the side of the page. There are typically around 23 questions per paper and the maximum number of marks available is 35 on each test. These are forty minute papers and include questions such as can be seen below.
