Welcome to Year 5 – A New Adventure Begins!
We are so excited to bsupport e working with your children this year. Year 5 is an important step in their learning journey, full of exciting opportunities, challenges, and the chance to grow in independence and confidence.

Autumn 1
Our Learning This Half Term
English (Writing): Creating imaginative warning tales with Alien Landing as our inspiration.
Reading: Taking a deep dive into The Wild Robot – exploring characters, themes, and big ideas.
Maths: Securing understanding of numbers up to 1,000,000 and developing problem-solving skills.
Science: Investigating Force
History: Discovering the fascinating world of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings – how they lived, fought, and shaped Britain.
Computing: Programming with Scratch in our iProgramme unit – building coding confidence and creativity.
PE: Outdoor – Hockey to build teamwork and skills; Indoor – Team Building challenges to strengthen communication and resilience.

Autumn 2
Our Learning This Half Term
English (Writing): In our non-fiction unit, we have been writing sets of instructions on How to Invade an Anglo-Saxon Settlement and How to Become a Viking Warrior. We have also begun to write detailed character descriptions, using characters from our class novel Wonder to inspire us.
Reading: As mentioned, our novel this half-term is Wonder, a story about a boy who struggles to fit in because he was born to stand out.
Maths: Securing our understanding of addition and subtraction with ever larger numbers before moving on to multiplication and division methods and strategies. Finally, everybody's favourite - FRACTIONS!
Science: 3 - 2 - 1 - blast off! Our topic is space and we have learnt so much about our solar system but also our home - Planet Earth!
History: Discovering the fascinating world of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings – how they lived, fought, and shaped Britain.
Computing: In our iDraw unit we have been looking at graphical drawing using digital tools.
PE: Outdoor – Football to build our skills and tactical knowledge of invasion games; Indoor – Pilates to build our core strength and develop flexibility.

PSHE: We have been thinking about Keeping Safe, whether that be ourselves, our money or our possessions.
Spring 1
Our Learning This Half Term
Spring Term 1 – Learning Highlights:
English (Writing): In our non-fiction unit, we will write a description of a Viking warrior. In our narrative unit, we will write short stories describing a brutal Viking battle from a warrior’s perspective.
Reading: Our class novel this half-term is Viking Boy so we will take a closer look at the story of Gunnar’s vengeance.
Maths: We will continue to develop our understanding of fractions as well as develop our multiplication and division calculation skills, with a particular focus on using formal written methods.
Science: This half-term we will focus on the different properties and uses of materials as well as discover more about reversible and irreversible changes.
History: Our Viking unit will continue as we find out more about their homes, clothes, diet, jobs and beliefs when living in Britain.
Computing: In our iCyrpto unit we will learn about different methods of communication including semaphore and morse code.
PE: During outdoor PE lessons, we will focus upon the five Ds of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and …er… dodge. For our indoor PE lessons, we will focus on and get creative with the different disciplines of gymnastics including: travelling, rolling, balancing, jumping and using equipment.

PSHE: We will be thinking about Keeping Safe, particularly when online, considering the validity of media and information we see across different platforms.
Spring 2
Our Learning This Half Term
📚 English (Writing): All of our writing this half term will be centred around the Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with an explanation unit focusing on some of his wild and sugary inventions and then using the chocolate room to develop our setting description skills.
📖 English (Reading): To support us developing our reading fluency and comprehension skills, we’ll be using a science-based book for the first couple of weeks and then delve further into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
➕ Maths: After a little bit more fractions work, we will be moving onto decimals and percentages before looking at perimeter and area. Of course, we are also constantly improving our times tables knowledge to support us with quick mental calculations.
🧲 Science: In this half-term’s Animals including Humans unit, we will look closely at each stage of the human life cycle as well as discover more about the gestation periods of different mammals.
Geography: We will be learning about Global Trade this half-term, investigating how we are linked to other people and places, think about imports and exports as well as how goods are transported.
💻 Computing: Our iWeb unit will teach us about the different ways people use the services on the internet, as well as how to create and edit our own webpages.
💬 PSHE: We will be focusing on well being and how different things can make us feel.
🏑 PE: In our outdoor games lessons, we will be moving away from invasion games and learning about net and wall games, with a focus on mini tennis. For our indoor PE lessons, we will continue to focus on and get creative with the different disciplines of gymnastics including: travelling, rolling, balancing, jumping and using equipment.

Summer 1
Our Learning This Half Term
📚 English (Writing): Our non-fiction unit focuses on farming using the wonderful book The World That Feeds Us by Nancy Castaldo, with a focus upon farming in the winter. For our narrative, we will use the apocalyptic story of Boy in the Tower (written by Polly Ho-Yen) to inspire us. Throughout both units, we will focus on drafting and redrafting our writing so it is the best that it can be.
📖 English (Reading): We will use both of the above books to support us in developing our fluency and comprehension skills, with particular focus on modelling out how we retain the information we read.
➕ Maths: Our maths learning this half-term focuses on other areas of the maths curriculum with learning about shape, position and direction as well as some statistical work. We are also ramping up our arithmetic practice to maintain our calculation skills and use of written methods.
🧲 Science: In this half-term’s Animals including Humans unit, we will look closely at each stage of the human life cycle as well as discover more about the gestation periods of different mammals.
Geography: Ahead of our residential in Robin Hood’s Bay, we will be learning all about coasts, comparing them to our urban setting, as well as finding out how coastal erosion occurs and considering its impact.
💻 Computing: In our iEdit Video unit, we will become creative storytellers and confident digital creators by learning the essentials of video production.
💬 PSHE: We will continue to focus on well being and how different things can make us feel, including being online, being in school and our physical activity levels.
🏑 PE: In our outdoor games lessons, we be developing our athletics skills (in both track and field events) with one eye on our upcoming sports day. For indoor PE, we will be putting on our dancing shoes and striking a pose during our Bollywood unit
