School Uniform

We’re pleased to let you know that Castleton Primary School is supporting an active school uniform.

This change supports a more practical and comfortable approach to school clothing that better enables children to take part in physical activity, outdoor learning, and active play throughout the day.

To clarify, pupils will be expected to wear:

All children from Reception upwards are expected to wear school uniform, which is as follows:

School Uniform

  • plain black joggers, leggings, shorts or a skort

  • plain blue or white t-shirt or polo shirt
  • blue cardigan, sweatshirt or hoodie (zipped or non-zipped)
  • trainers
  • wellies

So that children can have full access to all the play areas throughout the seasons please can you provide a pair of wellies that will be left in school.

Other recommendations:

  • Gloves (recommended for play equipment)
  • Waterproof coat
  • Indoor pumps (a requirement in reception)

A labelled water bottle should be brought to school each day.

Our school uniform can be worn with or without a logo. Please see here a list of supermarkets that offer navy blue jumpers and cardigans, and white polo shirts without a logo.

Why we’re making this change:

  • Affordability for families – Joggers, polo shirts and sweatshirts are often cheaper and more widely available than traditional uniform items.
  • Consistency every day – No separate PE kit needed, children and families know exactly what to wear each day, simplifying routines.
  • Practical for OPAL and outdoor learning – Children can move freely and stay comfortable for play and outdoor lessons.
  • Teaching can be adapted more easily when children are already dressed for active participation.

We’re excited about the many benefits this change will bring and believe it will make school life easier, more inclusive, and more engaging for all children.

Leeds School Uniform Exchange

Leeds School Uniform Exchange was established in June 2020.  Now there are 279 exchange opportunities city-wide with almost 94% of schools in Leeds covered by an exchange.  The exchanges are at schools, online (mostly via Facebook pages run by parents) or based at community groups.  Great quality, second hand school uniform is available throughout Leeds for free. Please find any information on the Leeds School Uniform Exchange website link.If you have spare uniform and/or lost property to donate, please also get in touch.Leeds School Uniform exchange has two main objectives: environmental and financial.  By  opening up a city wide sharing infrastructure it encourages a sharing economy, cutting down the demand for new and turning a potential waste stream into a resource.  And, of particular importance now at a time of rising inflation, helping struggling families by removing the huge financial burden of school uniform. It’s not possible to measure all the exchanging that happens across the city but during last summer holidays there were 44 pop-up events which distributed over 8,000 items of uniform saving families over £45,000, 1,600kg of textile waste and 28,000kg of Co2e.Updates about all the summer exchanges can be found on the dedicated website and anyone can join the very active Facebook group which has over 2.5k active users.
